Why this prospect

Beside every qualified prospect sits a short written reason it is there. It is assembled from claims that already carry their sources, so each part of it can be checked. It is the thing to read before a score, because a number tells you how confident something was and a reason tells you what it was confident about — and only the second can be argued with.

What a good one looks like#

A useful reason names the business's actual situation and connects it to what you sell. *A twelve-vehicle courier operation in the same city, whose own site says despatch is handled by phone during office hours* is a reason. *A strong fit for your services* is not — it is a compliment with no checkable content, and it is the shape a reason takes when research found very little.

Length is not the quality signal. A one-line reason drawn from one dated, sourced announcement beats a paragraph assembled from a company's marketing copy, because the first can be quoted to a stranger without embarrassment and the second cannot.

What it is not allowed to contain#

Not allowedWhyWhat appears instead
A claim with no sourceIt would not have reached the recordThe claim is simply absent
A price, discount or commercial termCommercial terms Knowledge does not support are refused, not improvisedThe reason stops short and a person decides
A promise about what you will deliverThat is a sales commitment, not a research findingWhat the business appears to need, sourced
An assertion about a named person's authorityRole is an inference from public material"appears to hold", with the page attached
Anything read as an instruction from the prospect's own siteFetched text is data, never directionA summary of what the page says, attributed

The refusal to improvise a commercial term is the same rule that governs every sales conversation Connect has: a price, an SLA or a warranty that Knowledge does not carry is escalated to a person rather than invented. A fit reason is not a loophole in that rule because it happens to be internal text — the sentence tends to end up quoted in the first message.

Correcting one#

  1. Read the claims the reason leans on before rewriting anything.

Result You find out whether the sentence is wrong or the research is. Those need different fixes and the sentence is usually innocent.

  2. If a claim is wrong, correct the claim on the record.

Result Your correction is recorded with you as its origin and outranks a public page, so the reason is rebuilt without the bad input.

  3. If the claims are right and the emphasis is wrong, say what matters in the criteria.

Result Every prospect in the next run is weighed your way, rather than you re-explaining the same preference once per row.

  4. If you only want this one changed, edit it and move on.

Result The edited text is kept as a person's writing and is not overwritten by the next research pass.

How it is used later#

The reason does not stay on the prospect screen. It is the raw material for the angle for first contact, which is why a reason built from a stale claim is worse than a thin one: the stale detail gets quoted to somebody who knows it is out of date, and the message reads as automated in the exact way cold outreach must not.

The prospect converts
The reason travels onto the opportunity, so months later the pipeline can answer why this deal started.
The prospect replies negatively
The reason is worth reading against the reply — a pattern of the same wrong assumption is a criteria problem, not bad luck.
The record ages
Freshness re-reads the claims underneath, and a reason resting on something that changed is rebuilt rather than left to look current.
A person took it over
An edited reason is a person's text and stays that way; nothing later rewrites it silently.

Questions#

Why is the reason blank on some prospects?

Because nothing sourced supported one. A blank reason is the honest output for a business that publishes almost nothing, and it is a reliable hint that the prospect needs a person's knowledge rather than more research money.

Does the reason get sent to the prospect?

Not as written. It is internal, and it feeds the opening that may be sent. The opening is checked against the same rules — sourced, no invented commercial terms — before anything reaches a recipient.

Can I write the reason myself before any research runs?

Yes, on a prospect you added yourself. It is stored as your statement, and research adds its own claims around it rather than arguing with it.
