Connect and email marketing tools

An email marketing platform exists to send one message to many people who opted in, and to measure the result. Connect writes one message to one person, from one of your own mailboxes, because something specific happened. Neither substitutes for the other, and the reason is consent: a marketing list and a business correspondent have agreed to different things, and mixing them damages both.

What an email marketing tool does better#

  • Sending at volume. Dedicated sending infrastructure, warm-up, throttling and reputation management for tens of thousands of messages, which a normal mailbox cannot do and should not try.
  • Design. Visual template editing, responsive layouts, image hosting and preview across clients.
  • Segmentation and campaign analytics. Lists, segments, opens, clicks, cohort comparison and A/B tests on subject lines.
  • List growth mechanics. Sign-up forms, preference centres, double opt-in and landing pages.
  • Scheduled broadcasts. Send-time optimisation and staged rollouts across a large list.

If the job is a monthly newsletter to thousands of subscribers, that is the tool. Connect has no campaign object, no segment builder and no open-rate report, and adding them would be a different product.

How Connect sends, and why that bounds it#

Mail leaves through one of your own mailboxes — Gmail over the Gmail API, Microsoft Graph, or any IMAP/SMTP server — through the single send boundary in outbound.py that the engine and a person both use. A message is reported as sent only when the provider acknowledges it, and there is a real third state, uncertain, shown as uncertain rather than guessed, because re-sending on a maybe is how a customer gets the same reply twice.

The daily allowance bounds how much is processed and sent. When it is spent, work is held rather than dropped and the read cursor deliberately does not advance — advancing it on a refusal is how a mail agent loses messages permanently. That is a sensible property for correspondence and a hopeless one for a broadcast.

Volume
Bounded by the mailbox provider and the plan's allowance, not by a sending platform
Reputation
Your own domain's, because the mail comes from your own mailbox
Personalisation
Written per message from the thread, Knowledge and memory — not merge fields over a template
Measurement
Delivery evidence and the conversation outcome, not opens and clicks

Outreach, which is neither#

Connect does do cold outreach, and it is deliberately unlike a campaign. A prospect is discovered by research, claims are backed by evidence before they reach the record, and no email address is ever pattern-generated — a prospect with no discoverable address stays a researched prospect with a different next action. A compliance check runs before the first message, and a reply stops the cold sequence.

That costs volume on purpose. If your plan depends on contacting everyone at a company whether or not their address is published, Connect will not produce those addresses. See no guessed email.

Running both without harm#

  1. Send newsletters and campaigns from the marketing platform, on a subdomain if your provider recommends one.

Result Bulk reputation is kept away from the mailbox your invoices and replies leave from.

  2. Let Connect own replies, one-to-one follow-ups and researched outreach from your real mailboxes.

Result Correspondence keeps the sender identity a customer recognises.

  3. Make unsubscribes flow into Connect's suppression, not only into the marketing list.

Result Somebody who opted out of marketing is not then chased by a follow-up. A flag held only in another system is invisible here.

Questions#

Can Connect send a newsletter to my list?

No, and it should not. There is no campaign or segment object, sending goes through your ordinary mailbox under a daily allowance, and the reputation risk of bulk mail from a correspondence mailbox is exactly the risk you are paying a marketing platform to absorb.

Does Connect handle unsubscribes?

Yes — suppression, unsubscribe, complaints and do-not-contact are checked in one place before any outreach, and a do-not-contact entry is not cleared casually. What it cannot see is an opt-out recorded only inside another platform, so those need to reach it.

Which system should own the contact's consent state?

Whichever one sends the mail that requires consent — and if both send, they must both know. In practice the safest arrangement is that a suppression recorded anywhere is written to both, because the cost of a missed opt-out is far higher than the cost of a duplicated one.
